LEARNING TO LAUGH
In order to truly accept yourself - for who you've been, who you are, and who you hope to become - it's important to laugh.
LIFT YOUR MOOD:
When you laugh, your brain releases chemicals that make you feel good. These endorphins are natural mood boosters, producing the same euphoric feelings that you experience on drugs.
When you are no longer using drugs or drinking alcohol, it is time for the brain to recover and get back to naturally producing the normal amount of endorphins.
With laughter being a natural mood booster, you'll feel increasingly positive. You will also notice more motivation to stay clean and keep going on your recovery journey.
FINDING HUMOR IN THE PAST:
As you make progress in your recovery, you will most likely start to find humor in some of your past behaviors. You may have found yourself in some awkward situations when you were still abusing drugs and alcohol.
Being able to laugh at yourself and some of the things you did can help serve as a reminder that you never want to repeat those mistakes.
CHOOSE THE BRIGHT SIDE:
Each and every day, try to make a conscious decision to look on the bright side. Learning to do that can take time - and that's perfectly normal.
You might need to work on some other emotional issues before you can truly laugh, but if you commit to starting with a simple smile, the door to heart-felt laughter begins to open a little wider day by day.
Adding humor to your recovery journey allows you to experience things from a brand new perspective.
Laughter and positivity will allow you to see just how much you've grown and help you recognize that the challenges of addiction have made you a stronger, wiser person.
Many of us felt that we would never be able to experience any fun or enjoyment while sober, but that same many of us think differently today. We have found that we can have fun and enjoy life while sober.
