Getting Started With Meditation

Meditation is a practice that can provide many benefits for mental and physical health. Here are some tips to get started:

  1. Choose a comfortable environment.

    1. Find a quiet and peaceful space where you can sit or lie comfortably.

  2. Set a timer.

    1. Start with short meditations, such as 10-15 minutes.

  3. Focus on your breath.

    1. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breath as it enters and leaves your body.

  4. Choose a meditation technique such as:

    1. Mindfulness meditation: Observing thoughts and feelings without judgment.

    2. Mantra meditation: Repeating a word or phrase.

    3. Guided meditation: Following instructions from a teacher or a recording.

  5. Start small and gradually increase.

    1. As you become more comfortable, slowly extend your meditation sessions.

  6. Be consistent.

    1. Aim to meditate daily, even if it's just for a short time.

  7. Additional tips:

    1. Wear loose and comfortable clothing.

    2. Avoid distractions such as phones or television.

    3. If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your breath.

    4. Don't be discouraged if you find it difficult at first. Meditation is a skill that takes practice.

Meditation was something I started practicing and struggled with back in 2020 when I was still in treatment. I have always been a restless person and have a hard time quieting my mind me which made meditation extremely difficult for me in the beginning. I still struggle with it to this day and have a hard time staying consistent with practicing it. I have always preferred guided meditations because for me they are easier and are the best way to meditate when just starting out.

My favorite app is Insight Timer which you can download for free on the app store. It has long meditations, short meditations, guided meditations, and an emotions tracker. Whenever I want to meditate I use this app. I recommend downloading it if you are just starting out on your meditation journey.

I wish you all peace and serenity!
